Actor Sumita Sanyal, who had worked with Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna and Dilip Kumar, died at 71. She was known for her roles in 'Anand,' 'Guddi,' 'Mere Apne' among others.
Her portrayals of the characters in films like 'Anand'(70), Ashirwad(68) etc received critical acclaim and audience approval as 'excellent'.
Sumita Sanyal was born as 'Manjula Sanyal' on October 9, 1945 in Darjeeling.
In 1960 she entered in to film industry by acting in a Bengali film by the introduction by film artiste Leela Desai.She later acted in several Bengali films and in films of eminent directors like Satyajit Ray,Tapan Sinha etc also.
Her Benagli film 'Sagina Mahato' earned wide appreciation in which Dilip Kumar was the hero.
'Apanjan' was a Bengali film directed by Tapan Sinha which won National film award as Best feature film in Bengali and was a commercial success also.Chhaya Devi was the heroine of this film in which Sumita Sanyal acted in supporting role.This film was remade in Hindi as 'Mere Apne' in 1971 and it was debut film of Gulzar as a director.Meena Kumari,Shatrughan Sinha,Vinod Khanna acted in Key roles of Mere Apne.Sumita Sanyal portrayed character 'Lata' in this film who is wife of character Arun Gupta , handled by actor Ramesh Deo.
The Bengali film 'Nayak' was directed by Satyajit Ray in 1966 in which Uttam Kumar and Sharmila Tagore were in the main lead.In this critically acclaimed film Sumita Sanyal acted in the role as 'Promila Chatterjee'.
'Anand' released in 1971 is a film which has been ranked among the 'Top 25 Must see Bollywood Films' by 'Indian Times Movies' and considered as the best film of Rajesh Khanna. Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan acted in pivotal roles in this film in which Sumita Sanyal acted opposite Amitabh Bacchan.
She was married to film editor Subodh Roy.
She also acted in TV serials and on professional stages and she had association with the group 'Ranga Sabha'.
