Starting his career with Bombay Talkies (he was one of the screenplay writers of “Kismet”) and later shifting to Prabhat, he made his debut as a director with “Hum Ek Hain” which introduced Dev Anand. Besides directing, Santoshi wrote stories, screenplays, songs, reaching dizzy heights of success with musicals like “Shehnai”, “Khidki”, “Sargam”, “Shin Shinaki Boobla Boo” and “Hum Panchhi Ek Dal Ke”. Tum kya jano, tumhari yaad mein (“Shin Shinaki Boobla Boo”), Koi kisika diwana na bane (“Sargam”) and Neend na mujhko aaye(“Post Box 999”) are among his best compositions.He tried to come back with “Barsaat Ki Raat” and “Dil Hi To Hai” made in the sixties but lost ground to younger directors and writers.Santoshi died on September 7th 1978, at the K.E.M. Hospital where he was undergoing treatment for kidney trouble.
