Rehman’s career spanned from the late 1940s through to the late 1970s. He was an integral part of the Guru Dutt team, and most known for his roles in films, like Pyaasa (1957), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) and Waqt (1965)
He was born on 23 June 1921 at Lahore, British India, in a Pashtun origin family. His family traced its roots to King Amanullah Khan of Afghanistan and two of his grand-nephews are actors in Pakistan. He graduated from Robertson College Jabalpur.
After college (1942) he joined the Royal Indian Air Force and trained at Poona as a pilot. Air Force didn't appeal to him and soon left for a career in films at Bombay.
In 1944 he opted out of the Indian Air Force and started working at Prabhat Studios, Bombay, as a 3rd Assistant to Bollywood Director, Vikram Bedekar, who was then filming 'Lakharani'. On the sets of 'Chand' the crew were unable to find anyone who could tie a Pathani Turban, Rehman resolved this problem, and was given a small two lined dialog role in the film.
His first major role was in 'Hum Ek Hain' with Dev Anand during 1946, and then as legendary Emperor Shahjahan in 'Shahjahan' in the same year. He ended up starring in over 70 movies, in character roles, mostly debonair and aristocratic, often as a villain. Some of his more memorable films included 'Pyaasa', 'Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam', 'Waqt', 'Dil Diya Dard Liya', and 'Chaudvi Ka Chand'. He was a close friend of Film-maker/Actor, Guru Dutt.
Rehman also did key roles in 'Baharon Ki Manzil', 'Gomti ke Kinare', 'Dushman', 'Holi Ayi Re'. Rehman received four Filmfare nominations as Best Supporting Actor for: Phir Subah Hogi (1958), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966).
Rehman continued acting in films till the late seventies; a notable role was that of Suchitra Sen’s ambitious politico father in Aandhi (1975).
His acting career was cut short during 1977 when he suffered three massive heart attacks, which he barely survived, only to be inflicted by throat cancer - which led to the loss of his voice, and ultimately took his life on 5th Nov 1984
Rehman is still remembered by his fans, and his movies continue to be popular even today on various Hindi language channels.
Here is a list of my favourite songs where he makes an appearance
Jaane Woh Kaise Log Thhe Jinke (Pyaasa, 1957, SD Burman)
Main Jab Bhi Akeli Hoti Hoon (1961, Dharmaputra, N.Dutta)
Na Jao Saiyaan Chuda Ke Baiyaan (1962, Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam, Hemant Kumar)
Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke (1963, Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke, Ravi)
