Remembering Nigar Sultana 1932-2000


              
Nigar Sultana is most notably remembered for playing the role of Bahar in her husband K Asif’s epic film Mughar-e-Azam.

She was born on 21 June 1932 and entered films with the 1946 film ‘Rangbhoomi’. Raj Kapoor’s Aag (1948) was her first big break in Bollywood. She played the character role of Nirmala which was equally appreciated by critics and audience.
 She was very active in 50’s played character roles in numerous movies like Patanga, Dil Ki Basti, Sheesh Mahal, Khel, Daman, Anand Bhavan, Tankhah, Durgesh Nandini, Mirza Ghalib etc
She is most notably remembered for playing the role of Bahar who is jealous of the love of Madhubala and Dilip Kumar in historical epic film Mughal-e-Azam (1960).

She also appeared in some of the song sequences for which she is remembered till now. A jugalbandi “Teri Mehfil Mein” sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Shamsad Begum is one of the most memorable songs.
She acted with Ashok Kumar and Bina Rai in 1955 film Sardar and with Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari in Bimal Roy’s master-piece Yahudi.
Mere Humdum Mere Dost (1968), Do Kaliyan (1968), Bansi Birju (1972) and Raaj Ki Baat (1962) are among her noted releases after Mughal-E-Azam.
Jumbish-A Movement-The Movie in 1986 was her last Bollywood movie.
She died on 21st April 2000 in Mumbai, India.
Indian actress Heena Kausar is the daughter of Nigar Sultana.
