Manju Dey was born in Baharampore on May 7th, 1926. Her father’s name was Amarendranath Mitra and her mother was Kamala Mitra. She passed her Higher Secondary Examination from Baharampore Girls School in the year 1942. She passed the IA from Patna Rajendra College, in Calcutta and got admitted in the Culcutta University for MA. But she got married to Debabrata Dey in the year 1948 and that stopped her further education.
She participated in a parade in 1945. Watching that director Sushil Majumdar gave her a chance in his patriotic Hindi Film “Sipahi Ka Swapna”. Her first film was “Biallish” in 1951 directed by Hemen Gupta. She went to England to learn Cinematography, after that she became a director. She directed three films. They were “Swarga Theke Biday”, “Abhisapta Chambal” and “Sajarur Kanta”. She represented India in Jakarta Indian Film Festival in 1962. Apart from these activities she acted in open air theatre and commercial stage also. She died on September 30th, 1989.
