Remembering music composer Timir Baran Bhattacharya 1914-87

Shri Timir Baran Bhattacharya was born in Calcutta, in 1914. He was one of the pioneers of orchestration in Indian music. His own instrument of specialization was Sarod, which he studied with Amir Khan Sarodia, Allauddin Khan and Radhika Goswami. Shri Timir Baran was Music Director for Uday Shankar on his first dance tour of the world. He  also composed music for the dances and dance- dramas of the late Sadhona Bose. In the early years of New Theatres, Calcutta, Shri Timir Baran provided the music score for several films, many songs of which, especially of K.L. Saigal, became great hits. Shri Timir Baran’s orchestral work is also available on discs. Shri Timir Baran was, again, one of the first to introduce the concept of symphony in Indian orchestration. For some years he had his own symphony orchestra in Calcutta. He was also on the Staff of the Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta. For his eminence in the field of Music and his contribution to its enrichment Shri Timir Baran Bhattacharya was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Music Composition.
