Born in Aurangabad, Iqbal Qureshi was inclined towards music form very early in life, and often appeared on Aurnagabad Radio as a child artist. From Aurangabad he shifted to Hyderabad where he worked in Fine Art Academy where his friends were the film actor Chandrashekhar, and the famous leftist poet Makhoom Mohinuddin. His transferable job took him to Bombay, where impressed with his singing of Moinuddin’s ghazal, Lekhraj Bhakri offered him his first film, Panchayat (1958), which also happened to be the debut film of Manoj Kumar. It songs were very popular, which fetched him AVM’s Bindiya (1960). His next major assignment was Filmalaya’s Love in Shimla (1960) which was the launch pad for Joy Mukherjee and Sadhna. After giving some excellent music in Umar Qaid (1961), Banarasi Thug (1962) and Ye Dil Kisko Dun (1963), he reached the apogee of his creativity in Cha Cha Cha (1964). Thereafter, there is an inexplicable downfall in quality, though he continued to give music till the 1990s, composing for 28 films in all, including a Bhojpuri film.

Tribute to Iqbal Qureshi, an extremely talented music director in Hindi films, on his 18th death anniversary today.
Iqbal Qureshi was a very talented composer who was not given his due in his times, but his compositions are superb. He was a true maestro in every sense, he composed music for less than thirty Hindi films.
His career as a music director spanned over three decades from the fifties to the eighties. The movies he did in the sixties had musical gems that made a lasting mark on the listener’s memory.Though most of the films were low budget movies with lesser known actors, it did not deter him from creating good tunes and he did total justice to the songs.
Born and brought up in Aurangabad in Maharashtra, Iqbal Qureshi shifted to Hyderabad when it was a Nizam state. In Hyderabad, during his schooling itself he learnt classical music from several Ustads. He joined a Govt.department as a store keeper. He was transferred to Bombay and came in contact with Indian People's Theatre Association. He started giving music to IPTA dramas. Impressed with his tunes, Lekhraj Bhakri offered him his first hindi film as a Music Director. The film was 'Panchayat' (1958). 'Panchayat' movie' songs like "Ta thayya karte aana" became hit and AVM called him for their film Bindya (1960). His best film 'Love In Simla' came in the same year. It made a tremendous hit and there was no looking back. The films followed were 'Banarasi Thug' in 1962 and 'Cha Cha Cha' in 1964.
Even after giving hit songs also, Iqbal Qureshi did not get the number of films he deserved and finally ended up with a tally of only 28 films in his career, with one Bhojpuri film too. He never entered the politics nor he went to anyone asking for work. This inevitably ended his career with the film 'Lakhpati' in 1991.
He is best remembered for the songs, ”Main Apne Aap Se Ghabra Gaya Hoon” (sung by Mohammed rafi in 'Bindiya'), “Mujhe Raat Din yeh Khayal hai” (sung by Mukesh in 'Umar Qaid') "Phir Aane Laga Yaad Wohi Pyar Ka Aalam" (sung by Mohammed Rafi in 'Yeh Dil Kisko Doon') and “Subah na aayi Shaam na aayi” (sung by Mohammed Rafi in 'Cha Cha Cha').
Iqbal Qureshi was a very kind person and helped many in their troubles. He passed away on March 21, 1998 in Mumbai.
