Ila Arun is a popular Indian actress, TV personality and a Rajasthani folk/folk-pop singer with a unique, husky voice and a penchant for folk-pop fusion. She was born in Jaipur and finished her college education from the Maharani Girls College. She had a penchant for singing ever since childhood and had a particular liking towards Rajasthani folk music.
She was first seen in Lifeline (Jeevanrekha) a Hindi TV serial on life of doctors, along with Tanvi Azmi over doordarshan. She has been a part of the early Indian TV Industry, acting in the 1980s Bharat Ek Khoj and Yatra.
Her Bollywood career started with a raunchy number in Subhash Ghai’s Khalnayak. The song was ‘Choli Ke Peechey’ and it was an instant hit, which is still remembered and hummed by audience. Ila however, didn’t get the fair share of publicity. She continued singing in some of the successful Indian films of those times such as Lamhe. According to her, her career didn’t take off as the audience wasn’t ready to accept a different voice from the contemporary voices present at that time. Her rendition for A.R.Rahman in the blockbuster Slumdog Millionaire fetched her rave reviews.
She has produced several successful singles such as "Vote for Ghagra", which sold more than 100,000[citation needed] copies had some memorable numbers as Morni, Main ho gayi sawa lakh ki, Mera Assi Kali ka Ghagra, Darudi, Bichuda, Main Raatan Jagi etc.[vague].
She sang the promotional song Halla Bol for the Rajasthan Royals team in the IPL which became an instant hit.
She has delivered an electrifying performance in the 2008 hit Jodhaa Akbar as Maham Anga, Akbar's wet nurse, who is also like Akbar's mother. She has also acted in critically acclaimed films such as China Gate, Chingari, Well Done Abba, Welcome to Sajjanpur, West is West, and Ghatak. Recently, she has performed the role of Smt. Hansa Mehta in Samvidhaan which is a TV mini-series on the making of the Constitution of India.
