She retired from films in 1963 when she married and decided to move to the United Kingdom with her husband who was not from the film industry. She had a daughter with him named Meenaz, who died in 1991. Shakila's sister Noor (short for Noorjehan) was married to Johnny Walker (actor).
The famous song baabuujii dhiire chalanaa(बाबूजी धीरे चलना) from Aar Paar was filmed on her.
Shakila died of a massive heart attack in Mumbai on September 20, 2017
