About this film, a little more information. Besides being a great philosopher, poet and a learned man in many subjects, he was also a man of God. In this film the role of Omar Khayyaam is played by Saigal Saab. Suraiyyaa plays the role of Mehru, a famous dancer of Iran. She fell in love with Khayyaam’s poetry, and then with the poet himself. She approached him and professed her love for him. Khayyaam refrained from responding to the worldly love of Mehru. This piqued the arrogance of Mehru, who considered herself very beautiful and was angered that a man could refuse her offer of love. She became bent on seeking revenge for being spurned.
There is another character, Gyas Beg, role played by Wasti in the film. He is a rich man from Naishapur, and his heart is given over to Mehru. When he finds out that Mehru fancies Khayyaam, he is incensed. Considering Khayyaam to be his raqeeb (competitor) he vows to mortally harm Khayyaam.
Once Mehru invites Khayyaam on a false pretext. She tries all the female virtues and wiles to try to win him over, and then going to extreme she even tries to seduce him. Khayyaam is perturbed, for he does not want any of this to happen. He picks up a burning earhten lamp and keeps it on his hand. The lamp is hot, some oil spills on his hand and his hand is burnt. And yet, he does not let his voice break or any sign of pain come to his face. It is then Mehru realizes the true element of this person called Khayyaam, and falls to his feet. Khayyaam forgives her and she becomes his student and follower.
It is said at some places, that the mention of ‘Saqi’ (bearer of wine) in Khayyaam’s poetry refers to Mehru. In a manner of speaking, Mehru became the muse for Khayyaam.
From the writings about this film, the roles played by Saigal Saab, Suraiyyaa and Wasti are very powerful performances.
